This Too Shall Pass: Emotions as Waves

Happy Spiritual Care · 1 min read · Educational reflection

When a strong emotion arrives, whether fear, sadness, anger or loneliness, it can feel as though it will last forever. In that moment the mind often says: “It will always be like this.” One of the most helpful things we can learn is that emotions, however intense, tend to rise, peak and gradually subside, much like waves.

Psychological approaches sometimes describe this as “riding the wave”: noticing a feeling, naming it and allowing it to move through without fighting it or acting on it immediately. Trying to push an emotion away can make it louder. Making room for it, with curiosity and kindness, often lets it pass more gently.

The Qur'an offers a deeply reassuring perspective: “For indeed, with hardship comes ease. Indeed, with hardship comes ease” (94:5-6). The repetition itself is a comfort. Hard moments are real, but they are not the whole story, and they are not permanent.

A simple practice for a difficult wave: Pause and take a few slow breaths. Name the feeling quietly: “This is sadness.” Notice where you feel it in your body. Remind yourself: “This is a wave; it will rise and it will fall.” Make a short dua or dhikr. Then, when you are ready, take one small caring action, such as drinking water, stepping outside or calling someone you trust.

Some waves are bigger than we can ride alone. If difficult emotions are frequent, overwhelming or getting in the way of daily life, please speak with a doctor or mental health professional. And on the hardest days, remember: this too shall pass.
